Vivo Y20 (2021) is an entry-level smartphone of the Vivo Y Series that comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 processor, 4GB RAM, and 64GB storage with Ultra Game Mode for PUBG lovers.
Currently, the retail price of Vivo Y20 in Bangladesh is ৳13,990 which means you can easily buy budget in Bangladesh.
What’s in the Box?
When it comes to the unboxing experience of the Vivo Y20, the first thing you get is a smaller box with paperwork and the sim ejector tool.
Right underneath it is the device itself, and you do get a protective film on the 6.51-inch front display.
As far as accessories, you do get a huge charging brick, and this phone is capable of an 18W flash charger, and it gets that huge 5,000 mAh battery that charges up to 70% in just a little over an hour.
You also get a regular USB cable and wired headphones.
Booting into Funtouch OS 10.5 on the Vivo Y20 took a little over 34 seconds which is just good enough, and the OS seems smooth with the custom skin.
Build Quality
When it comes to the build quality, design, and materials of the Vivo Y20. You get a glass screen and a polycarbonate back, or plastic which is good in case it drops.
The weight of the Vivo Y20 is only 192 grams so it’s pretty fair. Color options for the Vivo Y20 are mainly two, Nebula Blue, and Dawn White. I only got to play with the black and blue but the dawn white seems quite premium.
When it comes to Ports and I/O, we’ve got the fingerprint reader which is also the power button. I’m a fan of this design and it’s become popular of late. I also like that it’s a different shade of blue for the Nebula Blue version.
On the left side, we’ve got the SIM and Micro SD card slot. It’s the dual sim kind and no hybrid so you can put your micro SD and sims with no issues. Underneath the phone is the headphone jack, microphone, charging port, and speaker.
Up top is where you have the earpiece with the camera in the water drop notch beneath it and on the back is where we get the rectangular camera array section with the “Designed for Y Series” Inscription and logo right below.
Display Quality
Vivo Y20 does have a 6.51-inch LCD IPS display, pretty industry standard for the midrange market. It’s put in a water drop notch screen and it’s got the 2.5D curved glass screen going on.
The aspect ratio here is 20:9, the Resolution is HD + set at 1600 x 720p and it’s a medium-density screen at 270 PPI or Pixel Per Inch. You’ve also got dark mode on here. I found watching and streaming to be good and overall enjoyable.
For a market like Bangladesh, where mobile data can get quite expensive, this is a consideration for people who would be conserving their data since the maximum streaming resolution is 720p, up to 60fps.
I also found the gameplay resolution to be sharp as well despite being a 720p screen. I didn’t feel like I missed anything.
Sound Quality
The sound quality on the Vivo Y20 is okay as well, it’s got a single speaker at the bottom and you can actually block it if you place your hands over it during gameplay or when you’re watching videos.
You might want to invest in wireless headphones or use the headphones that Vivo includes in the box. It sounded decently loud and it wasn’t scratched up or anything.
Call quality was fine, text and voice over the internet were fine as well people on the other side will hear you clearly.
Software, Storage Performance & Features
Similar to a couple of midrange devices in this price range, you’ve got Android 10 on here skinned with Fun Touch OS 10.5. The processor on here is the Qualcomm snapdragon 460, an 11 nm Octa-core processor.
As I mentioned before, Vivo Y20 comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage version and Vivo Y20 price in Bangladesh is 13,990 BDT (retails price). You can also buy 3GB RAM and 32GB storage versions if available to your market. If anyone’s buying, I would suggest the higher version.
Vivo Y20 is pretty responsive and worked smoothly for me and Funtouch OS wasn’t limiting for me and I did find more useful features, especially in the settings and when I wanted to game.
In fact, there’s a feature where you can slide your three fingers up to access text messages during gameplay if you don’t want to quit the app immediately or slide three fingers down to take a screenshot. Speaking of gameplay and gaming quality the Vivo Y20 was at a default medium for call of duty which we always use for our tests, I didn’t notice any lags.
It did get slightly warm to the touch but nothing serious at all and the gameplay was enjoyable overall.
Battery & Charging Performance
You do get a 5,000 mAh battery on Vivo Y20 which has been good enough for me personally. Vivo claims a standby time of 14.9 hours, however, I found standby time to be good and usability for day-to-day quite good as well.
30 minutes of gaming call of duty specifically took only 6% of the battery out (from 51% it went down to 45%) which means If you are a PUBG or call of duty lover, Vivo Y20 is the ideal gaming mobile in Bangladesh.
On the matters of charging, I found the 18V fast charger to be fast of course, although I do wish we had USB C it does the job.
You should get enough power to last you for over 50% of the next day till you need to charge again, and I really did like the standby time performance of the Y20.
Something interesting that you also get is Reverse charging. Basically, with an OTG cable, you’ll be able to power up your other device. I mean, you’ve got a 5,000 mAh battery so not only do you have enough power for your own phone but you’ve got enough for another device.
Fingerprint Reader & Face Unlock
The fingerprint reader that’s side-mounted works pretty fast. Same with Face Unlock but I preferred using the Fingerprint reader more, especially in these times when we’re wearing masks and people might not want to remove them.
Camera Quality (Photos & Videos)
When it comes to the camera, Up front it’s a modest 8MP camera that would shoot a maximum of 1080p video in 30 frames per second. The back has a triple camera setup, 13MP wide, 2MP macro, and 2MP depth sensor.
But how does it perform?
I would say that the selfie quality alongside the front-facing portrait mode was actually impressive when there was enough light. During the day, you will get the best selfies especially if there’s not so much exposure or the background is not so far from the subject.
There are still more modes in the front camera, panorama mode for group selfies, and Live Photo mode which does a short video alongside the photo taken, and you can press and hold to play it.
When it comes to the back camera, you do get some decent shots out of this camera, the reds are a bit more pronounced, in enough light, you would notice the punch in colors, and the reds as I mentioned do stand out.
In portrait mode, the same flower can get the background blurred in the shot and you can also adjust the blur level of the shot before you share as you can see you can adjust it all the way from f16 with no bokeh up to a super open f0.95 which simulates a lot of light coming in and allows for a lot of background blur.
There’s no telephoto camera so it’s all digital zoom on here which is up to 4X but with 1 and 2x selection modes. In 2x mode, it gets a little blurry and you do notice some noise to compensate, this is the same with 4x.
Again, with textures and zoom, you get the quote-unquote best image with the 1x lens or the still 13 Megapixel camera when it’s not zoomed.
The same pattern is noticed when you zoom, however, here in this image with more sunlight, the texture is more apparent, and lines can be noticed in the tires.
Its maximum recording capacity is 1080p at 30 frames per second and it’s not too shaky. Although, there’s no mention of whether it’s got electronic stabilization. Also, no mention of night mode but I took shots at night with the Y20.
Conclusion
It’s no doubt that Vivo Y20 is built with premium quality and a high-end finish. It’s a better option than the other phones for the price. Therefore, it’s up to the consumer which brand they would prefer to purchase an established brand with high-quality products or a lesser brand with an underperforming smartphone.
Vivo Y20 is one of the best smartphones in the Bangladeshi mobile market. If you are a gamer and looking for an entry-level handset for PUBG, I would definitely suggest you Vivo Y20. You can buy Vivo Y20 in Bangladesh for 13,990 BDT which is comparatively cheaper than other smartphones with similar features.
